HEAP - Home Energy Assistance Program

Be sure to check out the Home Energy Assistance Program, which provides help with heating bills, as well as free heating equipment repair and replacement, for income-qualifying households. New York State has resources to help keep your heat on.

Project Warmth

United Way of Long Island (one of our Hub partners), has an emergency fuel fund, Project Warmth. This is a safety net for households that are struggling to pay their heating bill.

Heat Pumps

  • Long Island customers who are interested in heat pumps are handled directly by the PSEG Home Comfort Program.

  • National Grid Long Island also has information about geothermal energy.

  • NYS Clean Heat provides educational information about heat pumps and details about available rebates, low-interest financing options, and contractors in a customer’s specific geography. 

  • NYSERDA’s Heat Pump Planner can help you evaluate your possible home heat pump options.

  • The Guardian visualizes the science of heat pumps on its website.

  • The Heat Smart Tompkins site has lots of resources on heat pumps.

  • This 2017 study [pdf] from Taitem Engineering in Ithaca, NY indicates that heat pump technology can be cheaper than propane or even natural gas!

  • A 2023 study found that, even at 0 degrees Celsius, heat pump efficiency is still significantly higher than fossil fuel and electric resistive heating systems at an appliance level.
